Casablanca, a mere 30-minute train ride from Muhammedia, became our next destination. The train journey, a comfortable and affordable experience, offered a glimpse into local life. Second-class tickets, costing less than two dollars, provided a vibrant and authentic experience. While first-class was an option, the second-class carriage offered a charming glimpse into everyday Moroccan life.

Casablanca, immortalized by the iconic film, failed to live up to the cinematic grandeur. The city’s modern architecture and bustling commercial district bore little resemblance to the romantic portrayal. The famous restaurant inspired by the movie was a tourist trap, lacking the charm of the silver screen.

The old Medina, however, offered a more authentic Moroccan experience. A labyrinth of narrow streets, it was a treasure trove for bargain hunters. Souvenirs, spices, and everyday essentials were all within reach, but haggling was essential.Damjan, ever the impulsive adventurer, discovered a hidden gem – a guitar shop nestled amidst the bustling souk. The allure of learning a new instrument was too strong to resist, and he emerged with a guitar in tow.

Amidst the Medina’s vibrant chaos, we encountered a timeless figure: the water seller. Clad in a colorful djellaba and a traditional fez, he navigated the bustling crowds with ease. His leather canteen, adorned with intricate patterns, and a set of gleaming brass cups were a familiar sight. As he offered refreshing water to thirsty passersby, he embodied the spirit of traditional Morocco amidst the city’s modernity.

The Hassan II Mosque, a modern architectural marvel, was a highlight. Its size and grandeur were awe-inspiring, though some imperfections in the stonework were noticeable. The mosque’s cleanliness and order were impressive, contrasting with the bustling chaos of the city. The adjacent lighthouse was equally impressive, a beacon against the Atlantic backdrop.

After exploring the city, visiting museums, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, we returned to Muhammedia by train. The first-class experience was a stark contrast to the second-class journey, offering a clean and spacious environment with minimal passengers. The return fare was a mere fifty percent increase, making it a worthwhile upgrade.

Our days in Muhammedia were filled with exploring the city, relaxing by the marina, and preparing for the next leg of our journey. The town provided a peaceful respite after the chaos of the previous weeks, allowing us to recharge and plan our next move.
