We have a crucial mission: provisioning the boat for our Atlantic crossing! Luckily, our Lagoon 450s is a charter edition with two empty cabins – perfect for extra food and drinks. With four cabins, four bathrooms, and a spacious living area,we have plenty of room to transform our vessel into a floating pantry.
Gran Canaria offers a delightful surprise – incredibly affordable groceries and alcohol! Compared to Serbia and Montenegro, the prices here are a dream. We also discovered a vast selection of pre-made meals – “airplane food” as some call it – a lifesaver on the high seas and ideal for days when whipping up a meal isn’t an option. All we’ll need is electricity and a microwave.
Exploring the island became a delightful chore, intertwined with our shopping sprees. We rented a car and made several trips between Puerto Rico and Las Palmas, collecting essential parts for the engine service, extra ropes, and those irresistible little extras you stumble upon, muttering, “Yes, we definitely need that!”
Our adventures were far from confined to the shops. The Maspalomas Dunes stole the show. These magnificent golden hills and valleys of sand, contrasting vibrantly with the cerulean sea and sky, are a sight to behold. The fine sand heats up quickly, making early mornings the ideal time for a visit.
Las Palmas offered its own treasures. We delved into history at the museum, captivated by the model cabin of La Niña,Christopher Columbus’s ship, and the Casa de Colón, originally Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This very house served as Columbus’s residence before his historic voyage across the Atlantic. The museum also houses some truly impressive pre-Columbian artifacts from South America, sparking a new appreciation for the advanced knowledge and skills of these pre-colonial societies.
This week, a perfect blend of work and pleasure, is nearing its end. Soon, we’ll be welcoming Zvone and Slobodan – a story for another post!
